Corey Lemonier will lead Auburn into NFL draft
By Charles Goldberg, AuburnTigers.com
AUBURN — Corey Lemonier will likely be the first Auburn player selected in this year's NFL Draft on the way to joining a long list of Tigers who have won a shot at the pros.
The NFL has called the names of Auburn players approximately 250 times, from Walt Gilbert starting the trend in 1937, to Bo Jackson being drafted in 1986 and 1987, to Cam Newton being the first overall pick in 2011 to Brandon Mosley representing the Tigers in 2012.
There were lots of folks in between.
Other Tigers have been selected in other pro football drafts, too.
The first round of this year's draft starts at 7 tonight. The second and third rounds will be Friday. The final four rounds will be Saturday.
Lemonier is projected as a second or third-round pick — and as a top-flight pass rusher at defensive end.
He doesn't figure to be the only Tiger. Tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen could be the next to go after showing scouts he's overcome surgery for a torn labrum in his hip that cost him the second half of last year.
A blistering 40-time of 4.29 has running back Onterio McCalebb on draft day radars.
Steady receiver Emory Blake would be next for Auburn. He wants to follow his dad, Jeff, to the NFL. Jeff Blake played quarterback 14 years in the league. Daren Bates has moved back to safety after playing linebacker the last three years, and figures to sign as well. Offensive lineman John Sullen will be looking for a free agent deal, too.
